Feisty fiesta for Hoon Hay residents

30 October 2008

Hoon Hay’s November Fiesta next Friday will feature a plastic ‘ice’ rink, a visiting farmyard’ and performances from schools and cultural and dance groups. The Fiesta is one of the several community-centric events happening around Christchurch this summer.

The three-hour Fiesta is jammed packed with offerings from mini jeep and pony rides to food and craft stalls. Organisers anticipate more than 200 residents at the November 7 free event at the Hoon Hay Park on Mathers Road.

“It’s really about enjoying ourselves as community: being part of a group, sharing music and dance, and celebrating and laughing together, says Maggie Button, Community Activities Officer with the Christchurch City Council.  Residents say the Fiesta really has a fun and lively community feel to it and is full of energy, adds Ms Button.

For children, there will be bouncy castles, face painting, balloon twisting, mini jeeps, and the polymer skating rink, which has a plastic, rather than ice, surface.  A ‘visiting farmyard’  will bring a kune kune pig,  lambs, rabbits, guinea pigs and small ponies.

The variety of entertainment on the stage will include acts from the Gruuve pre-school group, Rowley school, Manning Intermediate & Hillmorton High School.  Youth from the area will also showcase their talent in basketball and skateboarding and residents have a chance to try disc golf.

A number of community groups and agencies, including Civil Defence and NZ Conservation Trust, will be onsite with information and advice.

The November Fiesta is the sixth event of its kind to be held in the Hoon Hay area and is organised by Christchurch City Council, Recreation & Sports Unit in partnership with local community organisations and supported by the Spreydon/Heathcote Community Board.
If wet, the event will be held on Friday 21st November from 4.30 pm – 7.30pm
