Youth win Heritage award

Winners of the Youth Heritage Week competition were announced on Friday 24 October.

An initiative of the Christchurch City Libraries’ South Learning Centre, students from years 5 to 13 went “Back to the future” and submitted interpretations of Canterbury’s heritage post 1946.

South Learning Centre’s Danielle Marston, says the purpose of the Youth Heritage Competition was to promote the character and history of the city and to engage students to be involved with heritage activities while increasing their awareness and use of new technologies.

Cashmere Primary School student Merten Wiltshire took first place from the year 5/6 division for his PowerPoint submission about the Suckling Shoe Company here in Christchurch.

Charlotte Sullivan and Catherine Hattaway also from Cashmere Primary School, took first place for the year 7/8 division from their impressive multi media presentations about Christchurch Theatres.

The third division finalist for Year 9/10 was awarded to Jessica Nawisielski, Marian College, with her PowerPoint display about Christchurch Hospital.

Team Leader for the South Learning Centre’s programmes Margot McKeegan says the standards of submissions were high and all students should be very proud of themselves.

“Students utilised their information literacy skills to research and produce multi media presentations which highlighted Canterbury’s Heritage.”

Finalists in the three divisions received prizes including an iPod Shuffle, Headphones and goodie bags.
