Christchurch runner up in North & South Top Town awards
10 October 2008
Christchurch is delighted to have been selected by North and South magazine as the runner up in its Top Town competition.
North and South have revived the special edition which looks at which city or town in New Zealand is the best to live, love, work and raise a family.
The North & South judges found Christchurch ticked all the boxes when it came to good management, good opportunities for work and education opportunities.
They highlighted the revitalisation of Christchurch’s Central City, noting that there was a real buzz around the town and the inner-city had become more vibrant.
The Christchurch City Council’s role in city management was also highlighted, with Christchurch scoring well for having a proactive Council that understands and responds to the community.
Transport was also a high-scorer for Christchurch. The accessibility of a range of recreation opportunities like ski areas and beaches helped make Christchurch a Top Town.
Mayor Bob Parker says while in his opinion Christchurch is the best place to live in the world, he is happy that it’s now clear that Christchurch is the best large city in the country.
"It was particularly satisfying on a personal level that the judges said one of the important factors was the proactive Council operating in Christchurch. This decision reaffirms what we all know - that Christchurch is a great city to live in."
