Redeveloped facilities open at Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre

Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre’s new Fitness Centre, Mind Body Room and Spin Room opened for business this morning.

Work begun late May to redevelop the area of Pioneer previously occupied by three squash courts into a new exercise and fitness area. For the last 16 days the existing Fitness Centre area has been closed while it was repainted, new carpet laid, an electrical upgrade undertaken and new audio-visual equipment installed.

Council Community Services General Manager Michael Aitken says with the completion of the redevelopment, the community now has access to bigger and better facilities which have been designed to better meet local customer needs.

"For some time exercise classes had been at capacity and a lack of space had impacted on the Centre being able to expand these services to offer new classes and better meet the community’s needs. Fitness Centre members were cancelling memberships, being turned off using the facility because of crowding and having to wait to use equipment."

He says customers now have a world-class facility which offers better cardio, weights and stretching areas, a new Mind Body Room for group exercise and a Spin Room.

"The whole community is invited to celebrate the grand opening of the new facilities this Saturday (11 October) when they will have access to free classes and be offered the opportunity to have a go at a variety of activities from 8.30am to noon."

Students aged under-15 will also be able to swim free from 8am to noon.

"There will be a variety of other activity throughout the morning as the Centre thanks customers for their patience and support during the redevelopment and welcomes new customers to Pioneer to experience the world-class facilities and programmes on offer."
