New suburb-to-city cycling maps

19 November 2008

It is now easier to find your way around Christchurch on a bicycle - whether you are cycling to work or school, wanting to save money, or just out for some fun.

The Christchurch City Council has revamped its Cycle Guide, clearly showing routes to the central business district from outlying suburbs.

“Petrol prices may have come down, but they’re still pretty high. This, coupled with the focus on health and fitness to combat obesity, means cycling is a great way to counteract both issues,” says Council Cycling and Pedestrians Transport Planner Michael Ferigo.

The Council has produced an overall Christchurch City Cycle Guide 08, showing 11 routes into the city centre and one scenic riverside ride.

The guide has also been separated into 12 specific maps, clearly showing each route, along with information about the ride, cycling and safety tips, and details of cycle parks.

The maps cover the following routes: Sumner to City, Marshlands to City, Burnside to City, Linwood to City, Cashmere to City, University of Canterbury to City, Pages Road to City, Avon River Link-New Brighton to City, Halswell to City, Wainoni to City, Papanui to City, and a Heathcote River scenic route.

All Christchurch City Cycle Guide 08 maps are available online: http://www.ccc.govt.nz/Cycling/CycleNetwork/. Hard copies can be collected from Council Service Centres, Libraries and cycle shops.
