Christchurch Gets Behind NZ Music Month

2 May 2008

Christchurch City is throwing its weight behind this year’s New Zealand Music Month.

New Zealand music will be everywhere in Christchurch during May. As well as gigs in pubs across the City, nearly every day in May live New Zealand music will be played at local libraries.

A key part of this year’s programme is the alignment with Christchurch libraries. Throughout May Christchurch City Libraries will host a wide variety of local musicians. The Christchurch Art Gallery will also showcase local artists.

A major local event during May will be at CHARTFEST 2008. Held on 23 May, CHARTFEST 2008 will provide young Cantabrians considering a career in the music industry with everything they need to know. Wrapping up CHARTFEST 2008 will be an incredible mix of Christchurch's most exciting music talent, including Atlas, The Valves and Flying Solo.

“Cultural well being is one of the four pillars of the new Local Government Act, and it is great to see the Council making a contribution to that by supporting local music,” says Hagley/Ferrymead Councillor Yani Johanson.

“As a city we have proud history of being a hotbed of musical talent. Showcasing new and emerging talent by having a co-ordinated NZ music month and supporting events such as CHARTFEST are essential to developing our local creative industries and culture” says Mr Johanson.
