27 June 2008
New Zealand architects are being invited to take part in a design competition for Christchurch’s new Botanic Gardens’ visitor and staff facility.
The Christchurch City Council is inviting Expressions of interest from this Monday (30 June) from registered architects and architectural or engineering firms to design the new $8 million facility.
To be built along the river bank on the northern boundary of the Gardens, the new centre will provide information facilities for visitors to the Gardens as well as new staff facilities, says Council Transport and Greenspace Manager Alan Beuzenberg.
Expressions of interest close on Friday 18 July at noon.
An assessment panel of elected members, Council staff and industry experts, headed by and independent architect, will assess the registrations of interest, selecting up to six architects to complete concept designs and detailed costings.
“The competition will run from mid August to October, the winner expected to be announced in December.”
He says it is proposed the new Centre will be built and opened for the 150th anniversary of the Botanic Gardens in 2013.
