Edgeware Community Facilities

Community and council representatives will join forces to explore options for the future of the former Edgeware Pool site and the provision of community facilities in the wider Edgeware area.

"There’s a real community passion and commitment in the Edgeware area to its community facilities." says Mayor Bob Parker. "It’s a really positive step to have a working party come together to explore all the options to help guide us in future decisions about community facilities in the area."

The Council declined a request to extend the time given to the St Albans Pavilion and Pool Group for its fundraising for a replacement pool, and instead supported the establishment of the working party as a broader approach to the future of the site.

The St Albans Pavilion and Pool Group had presented the Council with its business plan for the development of a $3.4 million community facility and pool on the site - for which $71,000 has been raised so far. The group sought longer time to secure funding commitments and had asked the Council to hold off making any decisions about the future of the site.

Today’s Council meeting instead supported the formation of a working party to engage the wider community on a range of possible options - which could involve existing and potential community facilities. The working party will include a member each from the local residents’ association, the St Albans Pavilion and Pool Group, the business community, and St Albans school; as well as one ward councillor and a local community board member; and an independent chair. The working party is to report back to the Council by the middle of January 2009.
