Living today, looking forward to tomorrow

Christchurch City Council is to launch its Sustainability Policy.
Sustainability is a word that is used often, yet means different things to different people.
The Council defines sustainability as; a dynamic process of continual improvement that enables all people, now and in the future, to have quality of life, in ways that protect and enhance the Earth’s life supporting systems.
The policy goals are to be efficient, cyclic, solar, safe and social.
“The Policy is firstly directed at improving Council actions,” says Councillor Sally Buck, Chair of the Sustainability working party.
“The purpose of the policy is to provide both a clear statement of Council commitment to sustainability, and a framework to enable issues of sustainability to be factored into the actions and decisions of Council in a transparent and consistent manner,” she says.
The Sustainability Policy’s over arching framework, will affect all Council strategies, plans and actions and can be used to test and evaluate current and future Council actions.
A new Sustainable Christchurch website will be launched on the day, giving tips on what you can do at home, work, school, play and in your communities.
Adopting this policy will enable Council to provide leadership to the community and other organisations.
The Sustainability policy is to be launched in Council Chambers on Friday July 18, 2008.
