Parking restrictions introduced to target boy racers
19 December 2008
The Christchurch City Council has today (19 December) introduced no stopping restrictions on Harper and Deans avenues to curb boy racer problems in the area.
This morning’s Council meeting unanimously supported the community’s request for no stopping restrictions from 11pm to 5am on the two streets, as well as into Helmores Lane from Harper Avenue to the bridge.
Mayor Bob Parker says the community is concerned with safety, property damage, litter, vandalism, noise issues and the poor image of the city being generated by the congregation of boy racers in this area.
“This morning’s Council meeting has given a clear signal it will not tolerate this type of inappropriate behaviour and will do whatever it can within its powers to stamp out the destructive and violent behaviour exhibited by boy racers and ensure Christchurch is a safe community for our residents, visitors and tourists alike.”
Police have strongly supported the new stopping restrictions and will from tonight begin rigorous enforcement of these.
