Little River Rail Trail temporary section under construction
18 December 2008
Work has begun on the Banks Peninsula Little River Rail Trail temporary section.
Christchurch City Council Transport Planner for Cycling and Pedestrians Michael Ferigo, said construction of the 800m walk and cycleway section has been underway since mid November and is looking good.
“The temporary section is going to make access into the Little River township much safer for pedestrians and cyclists,” he said.
“This extension of the Rail Trail means cyclists will no longer have to cross the State Highway.
“The new section will continue the track from where it currently ends and run adjacent to the Okana River, following it through to Wairewa Pa Road where they can safely access the township”.
Christchurch City Council awarded the project to Concut, a Christchurch based company.
The temporary section is likely to be used for two to four years while the permanent final route alignment of the trail is agreed upon.
