Sunnyside Garden Restoration

Plans to restore part of the Sunnyside Hospital garden as a public park are being released for comment.

Christchurch City Council Parks and Waterways Planner David Sissons says it is proposed features of the over 100-year-old garden be restored, to recognise the historical significance of the site and to suit its new residential subdivision.

The Council is suggesting the 1ha park be named the Sunnyside Heritage Garden.

In 2006 the Council’s elected representatives decided not to buy and restore the Sunnyside Hospital administration block. The Council was concerned it would not be suitable as a community facility, due to its quiet location and physical limitations restricting its use.The Council instead opted to retain the fountain, which will be restored by Ngai Tahu Property, and develop a memorial to Sunnyside.

Other features of the plan include restoring the reflecting pond and pathways, building a pavilion incorporating the fleche from the original administration block and housing interpretive displays, a new stone entrance from Annex Road, heritage seats and lighting.

Public feedback on the landscape plan is invited by Friday 5 September. The plan can be viewed at www.ccc.govt.nz/haveyoursay.

Both the proposed plan and name will require adoption by the Spreydon/Heathcote Community Board.
