CHRISTCHURCH HIGH TIDE PASSES WITHOUT INCIDENT
Concerns high tide would cause flooding on coastal and riverside roads in Christchurch this afternoon have not eventuated.
There was concern the high tide at about 4pm would increase the levels of the city’s already swollen rivers, the Avon, Heathcote and Styx.
However, Christchurch City Council Chief Engineer Ross Herrett says river levels have now peaked and are receding. No banks have been breached.
“There is still surface flooding on some of the city’s roads, particularly in the low lying areas around the Avon, Heathcote and Styx rivers, so motorists need to take care.”
River levels are also dropping on Banks Peninsula, where some minor weather related incidents have occurred.
“Banks Peninsula roads are open but there have been several small slips and surface flooding so, again, drivers need to be careful,” Mr Herrett says.
