Council receives application for development on former Feltex site

26 October 2007

The Christchurch City Council has received a resource consent application for a large travellers’ accommodation complex at 57 Peer Street in Upper Riccarton, the site of the former Feltex factory.

Steve McCarthy, Manager, Environmental Policy and Approvals says “The proposed complex will have 390  serviced apartments units on the roughly four hectare site with some of the buildings being up to 27 metres or seven stories high.”

The Council is contacting residents in the vicinity of the site to advise them of the application.  “We will do our best to keep residents informed if there are any significant findings resulting from our evaluation of the application,” Mr McCarthy says.

The site is zoned Business 4 (Suburban Industrial) in the City Plan and resource consent is required due to the amount of traffic that the development is likely to generate. The Council will be assessing the proposal to look at traffic generation and how it affects the surrounding neighbourhood.

The applicant - Senior Living Ltd has indicated they may change their application at some stage to make it a senior living complex for the over 60 age group. If this occurs another resource consent would be required.

The application is available for viewing at the Sockburn Service Centre.
