Volunteer Art Gallery guides wanted

17 October 2007

For Kay Malcolmson, being a volunteer guide at the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu is an opportunity to learn about art, keep her brain active in retirement and meet lots of new people.

She has been a volunteer guide for almost 10 years and says the job is fun, educational and rewarding.

"I have always loved art. I have no formal qualification to be a guide, simply a huge enthusiasm for art and meeting people.

"I always feel I should be paying the Gallery for the opportunity of being a volunteer guide! It is so rewarding."

Allison Fox who completed a BA majoring in Art History is currently Chair of the Gallery Guides and she finds working as a volunteer guide at the Gallery is a good way "to put her learning into practice".

A volunteer guide since 2003, she says she enjoys the mental discipline of guiding.

"There is a good team spirit amongst the volunteer guides and the Gallery is a great place to be working as a volunteer."

The volunteer guides are a valued and vital part of the Gallery team, says Gallery Director Jenny Harper.

"They provide an invaluable service for Gallery visitors from the daily tours to guiding community groups and school groups through exhibitions, assisting in the Education Centre and tutoring in our art appreciation courses.

"Being a volunteer guide at the Gallery is a fun and rewarding way to meet new people, extend your arts knowledge and offer your time and skills to the wider community."

The Christchurch Art Gallery is recruiting new volunteer guides, the next intake closing on 28 October.
