22 June 2007
Christchurch has been named as a host city for next year’s FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup.
The city will host a full pool round and both semi-finals for the World Cup which will be broadcast to a world-wide audience of millions in 125 countries.
Council Recreation and Sports Manager John Filsell says Christchurch had been given the "best draw in the country" for the event with a full pool round and both semi finals. The games will be played at QEII Stadium.
Six New Zealand cities – Christchurch, Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, Hamilton and Napier – had bid for hosting rights, the international event being hosted by New Zealand Football. North Shore will host the final.
Mr Filsell says with a full pool round and both semi-finals, Christchurch spectators will get to see at least eight international matches. "This is fantastic for our city."
The FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup will be held in New Zealand from 30 October to 16 November next year.
