Council makes joint bid to host 2007 World Netball Champs
17 January 2007
Christchurch City Council has today endorsed a joint bid to host the 2007 World Netball Championships.
An extraordinary Council meeting this afternoon, held in committee because of commercial sensitivity, agreed Council would make a bid with VBase and Canterbury Netball to host the international event.
Christchurch Mayor Garry Moore said Christchurch had the expertise, venues, infrastructure and a strong track record in successfully hosting such international events.
“Christchurch last hosted the World Netball Championships in 1999. This event was an overwhelming success. With our partners VBase and Canterbury Netball, Christchurch has the winning formula to again bring to a global audience, an event of international prestige.”
Netball New Zealand won the rights to host the 2007 World Netball Championships after the coup in Fiji saw the World Netball Federation evoke Fiji’s rights to the event.
Christchurch and Auckland were both asked in late December to make a bid to host the event by this Friday.
