Council concerned at rise in illegal rubbish dumping

17 January 2007

Christchurch City Council park rangers have noticed an alarming increase in the amount of rubbish being illegally dumped at parks and forests around the city in the last six months.

Council Coastal Parks Area Head Ranger Rodney Chambers says the dumping of illegal rubbish is irresponsible and ruins the scenery for all other users of forests and parks.

“It’s not just an increase in household rubbish being discovered at forests in the Bottle Lake area, rangers have also found more car tyres and actual cars being dumped than before,” he says.

“The cars are obviously transported to these destinations. We’re now asking the public to assist us in keeping the city beautiful by recording registration and description details of cars seen dumping rubbish or cars. Details can then be forwarded to Council to allow follow up enforcement action to be taken.”

In an effort to combat the escalating problem, Council will increase the frequency rangers patrol forest areas, and may look to introduce security cameras in a bid to catch perpetrators.
