Christchurch City Council Chief Executive appointed

Christchurch City Council has appointed a new Chief Executive, Tony Marryatt to replace Dr Lesley McTurk who resigned in January this year.

Christchurch Mayor Garry Moore says he is delighted that Mr Marryatt, Chief Executive of the Hamilton City Council for the past 12 years, has accepted the position of leading the Christchurch City Council.

“I am absolutely thrilled that we have attracted one of the best Chief Executives in local government in New Zealand to work in our city,” Mr Moore says.

“The Councillors saw the challenge to find someone who could consolidate the gains of the last few years and also build the organisation to world-class status.

“This is a time of heightened public interest in the stewardship of local Government. We are confident Mr  Marryatt  is the right person to continue our journey towards making Christchurch world class and ensuring value for ratepayers.”

Mr Marryatt says he is excited to be coming to work for such a progressive city. “I consider it an honour to be working with the Christchurch City Council to help shape the future of Christchurch,” he says.

Mr Marryatt brings a wealth of experience to his new role having had an outstanding 27-year career in local government. His initial career with the Raglan County Council, Kapiti Borough Council, Wairoa District Council and North Shore City Council was in financial management/ corporate services. He was Chief Executive of the Southland District Council before moving to Hamilton City Council as its Chief Executive in 1995.

During his extensive time in local government, Mr Marryatt  has been committed to achieving organisation excellence to deliver value and quality of service to ratepayers.

Under Mr Marryatt’s leadership Hamilton City Council was the Local Government award winner of the Performance Excellence Study Award in 2004 – the same accolade that the Christchurch City Council won last year.

Mr Moore says Mr Marryatt shares the Council’s vision of building a world class organisation. He values his staff, describing them as the “heart of an organisation –  they’re what make the Council a great place to work and the city an outstanding place to live,” Mr Marryatt says.

Mr Moore says that he, along with  the Councillors and Community Board members, welcome Tony and his family to Christchurch and the family of the Christchurch City Council.
