Akaroa water restrictions begin

Garden watering restrictions will be introduced in Akaroa again this summer.

Beginning on 14 December 2007, residents who live at an odd numbered street address can water their gardens on odd numbered days of the month and residents who live at an even numbered street address can water their gardens on even numbered days of the month.

Technical Services Team Leader Gareth Phillips says that unlike Christchurch with its artesian well water, Akaroa’s water supply is from treated rain-fed surface water streams with variable flows.

“The volcanic nature of the Peninsula means you don’t have to dig very deeply before the ground becomes dry. This means we rely on above ground water supplies which have variable flows and limited quantity during the warm months of summer,” says Gareth Phillips.

“The area’s influx of visitors over summer further strains Akaroa’s limited supply of water.

“It's up to everyone to use Akaroa’s water wisely. Watering gardens and irrigation account for around 60 per cent of the water used during the summer and it’s here where efficient water use can make a huge difference.

“Akaroa residents are getting accustomed to water restrictions over the summer months, and their cooperation in complying is greatly appreciated,” says Gareth Phillips.

The restrictions will remain in place until further notice, and maybe escalated if conditions require it. Changes to water restrictions will be advertised on the signs at the entrance to the town, in the Akaroa Mail, and at www.ccc.govt.nz/waterwise_
