Council launches new community grants schemes

12 December 2007

Christchurch City Council today (Wednesday, 12 December) has launched four new community grants funding schemes, designed to build and support strong communities.

The four schemes are: Strengthening Communities Fund, Small Projects Fund, Discretionary Response Fund and Community Organisations Loan Scheme.

"The new schemes replace existing Council community funding schemes and create a clearer, more structured and coherent alignment of the community grants funding to Council's strategic directions and areas of work priority to deliver the agreed community outcomes under the LTCCP," says Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker.

"The new schemes also address public confusion over the number of different schemes that have been available at metropolitan and local level. The new criteria is clearer, as is the application process."

He says the four new schemes will enable Council to build, support and empower strong communities within the city.

"Christchurch City has a proud history of supporting its community, distributing $8.3 million each year to community groups and organisations. For many of these groups, Council's community grants provide the core funding which ensures their continued operation and success in the community."

The four new schemes are:

Strengthening Communities Fund – this fund will be available for project-based costs for the provision and delivery of an agreed initiative. There will be no upper dollar limit and funding will be available for up to three years at metropolitan and local level. Applications for this Fund close on 31 March.

Small Projects Fund – this fund is also will be available for project-based costs to assist groups to enhance their capacity and/or increase participation in their activities. An annual grant of up to $5000 will be available at both metropolitan and local level. Applications for this Fund close on 31 May.

Discretionary Response Fund – this fund will assist groups where project and funding requests fall outside Council funding criteria and/or closing dates. It will also be available for emergency funding, and at metropolitan and local level. Applications open 1 July, the Fund closing when the pool of funding is allocated.

Community Organisations Loan Scheme – these loans are available for up to 10 years for organisations to improve or develop new and existing premises and for other major projects. There will be no upper dollar limit.

More information on the schemes is available from the Council’s website www.ccc.govt.nz/Community/Funding and the new funding guides will be available next week from Christchurch City Libraries and Service Centres.
