City Council’s contribution to cultural diversity recognised

30 August 2007

Christchurch City Council’s outstanding contribution to cultural diversity was recognised at this week’s New Zealand Diversity Forum in Auckland.

The Council was one of 11 organisations, and the only local authority, to receive an accolade for its achievements in this area. There are more than 200 participating organisations in the New Zealand Diversity Action Programme.

"Council was recognised for aligning a wide range of projects and programmes contributing to cultural diversity to the eight community goals in the Long Term Council Community Plan," says Community Support Manager Catherine McDonald.

"Major projects of note were the ‘diversity season’ of events in the lead-up to Race Relations Day, Cultural Galore Festival, Ethnic Football Festival, Pacific Pathways World Heritage Week, Outward Bound multi-ethnic course, activities for Matariki and Maori Language Week and Around the World workshops."

She says the Council’s work in supporting the Intercultural Assembly and range of other community initiatives relating to cultural diversity and community development were also acknowledged.

"This is wonderful recognition for Council and the work we do for our community which is now home to more than 160 different ethnicities."
