Time running out for candidates in local elections

20 August 2007

Nominations for the local body elections close 12noon Friday 24 August 2007.

The Christchurch City Council Electoral Officer Max Robertson is reminding people they only have until midday on Friday 24 August to get their nominations in.  As of Friday 17 August, the Council has received:

  • 5 nominations for Mayor
  • 20  nominations for Councillor
  • 34  nominations for community boards
  • 10  nominations for the District Health Board.

Mr Robertson says that if you’re a New Zealand citizen, over 18 years of age and you’re on the electoral roll you can stand as a candidate.

“All you need is the desire to represent your community and make a difference to Christchurch.”

Anyone wishing to stand as an elected member must be nominated by two people enrolled in that district or ward, and pay a deposit of $200. Nominations close at noon on Friday 24 August.

Mr Robertson urges people not to wait until the last minute to get nominations in.  “If you do leave it until the last minute and there is something wrong with, or missing from your application there will not be any extensions of time.”

Attached is the list of nominations received as of 22 August 2007.
