Council warns damage to cables may affect traffic lights
16 August 2007
People need to take care with traffic lights around the Central City after contractors damaged a Council communications cable today.
Traffic Systems Engineer Bruce Kelly said the contractors were placing ducts for fibre optic cables outside the Christchurch City Council building on Tuam Street when they accidentally cut through a cable carrying some Council telephone lines and the communications lines for about 30 traffic signal intersections.
“The lights will still be working, but the usual co-ordination between different sets of traffic lights may change. Motorists may find that instead of facing a series of green lights, they get one set of green lights, followed by a set of red lights - the lights may be out of coordination.”
People should take care over the next two to three days, particularly on Madras St, Barbadoes St and Fitzgerald Avenue from Moorhouse Avenue through to Kilmore St.
"It should be fixed within the next three days,” Mr Kelly said.
