Final public meeting on development policy next week

26 April 2007

Final public meeting on development policy next week

Next Thursday will be the final chance to attend a public meeting to find out about proposed changes to the amount people may pay when they develop property in the Christchurch City Council area.

The meeting on the development contributions policy will be held at the Council Chamber in 163 Tuam St from 5.30-7.30 pm on 3 May.

Development contributions are used to help fund the capital cost of reserves and infrastructure such as water supply and conservation, wastewater collection treatment and disposal, surface water management and leisure facilities. The charge made on the expanded community is based on the need for additional Council assets to ensure continuing levels of service. They are paid by many people who apply for resource consent, building consent or service connection.

Under the proposed changes to the policy, some fees will increase, but will be capped at 43% of the full charge in 2007-08, 72% in 2008-09 and 100% in 2009-10.

Since consultation opened on 11 April, public meetings have already been held in Christchurch, Diamond Harbour and Akaroa. The public can make submissions on the policy until 5 pm on 11 May.
