Hagley Park/Botanic Gardens Subcommittee Hearing Reconvenes

5 April 2007

Hagley Park/Botanic Gardens subcommittee hearing reconvenes

The Hagley Park/Botanic Gardens Hearing Subcommittee reconvened last Monday.

Councillors on the subcommittee were continuing their assessment of the written and oral submissions received from the public on the three draft plans for the Park and the Gardens.

The sub-committee considered the recommendations it will make to Council on changes to the 56 project proposals in the draft master plan. This includes the siting of the visitor/information centre and operational facilities and further changes to policy in the two management plans.

A further meeting of the subcommittee will be held within the next month to complete this.  A report will then go to a full meeting of councillors to adopt the draft plans as operative plans, incorporating the recommended  changes.

Mayor Garry Moore, who chaired the sub-committee says “It has taken longer than anticipated to consider all the options as there are three plans and 56 proposals to discuss. We have also been impressed by the large number of thoughtful submissions from groups and the public which we are also considering.’’

“The Park and Gardens are important iconic parts of our world-class city and it is important we take the time to ensure the best plans for their future management and growth.’’
