World Wheelchair Rugby Championships 2006 begin next Tuesday

6 September 2006

Christchurch City Councillor Graham Condon will officially open the 2006 World Wheelchair Rugby Championships next Tuesday, 12 September at Christchurch’s Westpac Centre.

In the past, Mr Condon has competed at 17 international wheelchair athletics meets, six Paralympics and has won 25 medals in that time. He also played wheelchair rugby for Canterbury when he retired from the athletics track.

The championships, being held from 12-15 September, will see the top 12 ranked wheelchair rugby sides in the world compete for the title of world champions.

New Zealand is the top seed to take out the tournament, with North American sides Canada and the United States expected to provide the toughest competition.

The opening ceremony takes place on Tuesday, 12 September at 11am and will be followed by New Zealand playing Switzerland at 12.45pm in the opening match of the tournament.
