Take a dance down memory lane at the Great Hall 1940s Tea Dance

Dust off your dance shoes and take a stroll down memory lane into the heyday of the 1940s tea dance and such sounds as Tuxedo Junction, It Had to Be You, and Chattanooga Choo Choo as part of The Arts Centre event for the Carter Group Heritage Week 2006.

On Sunday, 15 October from 5.30pm to 8pm, the Great Hall will be transported back in time. Decked out in bunting, period displays and war-time memorabilia, it will be in line with this year’s Heritage Week theme: Celebrate Great times, Great people, Great Places - 13 to 23 October. It is one of over 350 Heritage Week events throughout the city.

Part of the Garden City Big Band will entertain with dance standards from the 1930s and '40s at the Great Hall.

“The Great Hall Conservation Project Fund is delighted to support Heritage Week with The Great Hall 1940s Tea Dance.   It will be a fabulous evening full of music, song and dance recapturing the days when afternoon tea dancing was a respite for servicemen and women on leave,” says Jenny May, Chair of the Conservation Project Fund.

Proceeds from the dance will go towards conservation of the Great Hall, The Arts Centre’s most impressive performance and function venue, and one of New Zealand’s most significant heritage buildings.

For $15 you get supper, an original tea dance menu, and a dance to great music of that era. Tickets are available from the Arts Centre Information Centre, 2 Worcester Boulevard or phone 363 2836.  Door sales are limited so pre-booking is strongly recommended.
