Garden unveiling at Upper Riccarton Library today

9 November 2006

The Upper Riccarton Community and School Library unveils a new public artwork today (Thursday, 9 November) at 4.30pm by New Zealand artist Jeff Thomson.

Garden is a 13-metre long work made from a combination of screen printed and second-hand corrugated iron. It has been installed inside the library along the northern wall.

Two months in the making, Garden consists of about 200 individually cut and screen printed pieces of corrugated steel – ferns, flowers, leaves, roses, etc.

Today’s unveiling will be the first time the artist has seen the work complete, the length and size of the work having made this impractical during its making.

Mr Thomson is well-known for his work with corrugated iron, his public sculptures being installed throughout New Zealand and Germany.

Garden is his third public installation in Christchurch – the other two being Blade at Northlands Shopping Mall and Beckenham Head at Beckenham.

Garden was funded through the Christchurch City Council’s Art in Public Places Fund.
