Council’s Community Plan submission hearings begin
25 May 2006
The Christchurch City Council today began hearing submissions on its 2006-16 Long Term Council Community Plan.
The Council has received more than 1900 submissions to the draft plan which was published for community consultation on 5 May.
The draft LTCCP contained a proposed capital works programme, details of activities and levels of services and areas for proposed savings to services.
The greatest number of submissions (1047) were around a proposal to rationalise community libraries and to stop the mobile library service. Submitters described libraries as an essential service to the community, with a number describing them as being “at the heart of local villages”.
Council will continue to hear submissions until Wednesday, 7 June, and is prepared to hold hearings on 8 and 9 June if necessary. Some of the hearings are at night and this Saturday.
Council will deliberate the plan on 12 and 13 June. The completed 2006-16 community plan will be formally adopted on 30 June and comes into effect from 1 July.
