Deadline for Sister Cities Young Artists Competition extended
20 March 2006
The deadline for this year’s Christchurch Sister Cities Young Artist Competition has been extended until Thursday, 23 March to allow budding 13-18 year-old artists an opportunity to enter.
International Christchurch Youth (ICY) has again organised the event, themed What Does Global Citizenship Look Like?
This is a brilliant opportunity for young artists to launch their career by creating an artwork which will be exhibited in a local art gallery. The winner will also receive international exposure when their work is displayed in Washington DC in July.
Melissa Gray of St Margaret’s College received this recognition when she won the inaugural Sister Cities Young Artists Competition last year. As winner, her artwork was sent to Sister Cities International to compete in the international art competition and her work, Dreaming the Thoughts of Others, was so applauded it now features on the front cover of their Sister Cities International Showcase of Young Artists 2006 competition brochure.
As the first ever New Zealand entrant to the competition, she was one of 95 entries from 20 countries. Melissa also won the opportunity to hold her own exhibition at Creation ArtSpace last August, where she sold a number of her artworks.
All entries to the competition will be exhibited at the ArtZone, Centre of Contemporary Art (COCA) in Gloucester Street from 29 March – 21 April and a winner announced.
The winner’s artwork will then be couriered to Washington DC, USA, to compete in the Sister Cities International Showcase of Young Artists 2006. The winner will also receive the opportunity for a free exhibition at Creation’s ArtSpace, the chance to enter the Young Designer Awards and a fabulous prize from the Drawing Room.
Full details of the competition are available on Christchurch’s Sister Cities website http://www.christchurch.org.nz/SisterCities/News_and_Events/
ICY is supported by Christchurch City Council’s International Relations team. ICY aim to promote awareness and understanding of the world’s cultures, encourage youth involvement in international relations and promote international friendships.
