Flooding predicted for parts of Christchurch

3 March 2006

Christchurch City Council is expecting limited flooding to occur in some low lying parts of the city in the next 24 hours due to spring tides and storm conditions.

Water is expected to pond on the road in some streets in South Brighton and along the lower parts of the Avon and Heathcote Rivers. Among the areas most likely to be affected are parts of Long St, Clarendon Tce, Richardson Tce, New Brighton Rd, Bexley Rd and Beresford St.

Council staff will be doing everything they can to reduce the impact of the flooding that is expected to peak at high tide tonight at 10pm and tomorrow morning at 10am, Council’s Greenspace manager Michael Aitken said.

“We would like the public to know that we will be well aware of the situation but that anyone whose home or property is at risk should call the Council on 941 8999.”

Council drainage engineer Paul Dickson said a combination of spring tides, low air pressure and strong south easterly winds was responsible for today’s increased risk of flooding.
