Mayor welcomes more land transport funds
29 June 2006
Christchurch Mayor Garry Moore is delighted that Land Transport NZ (LTNZ) has increased this year’s National Land Transport Programme by 14 per cent compared to last year.
"This week’s announcement of a record spend for land transport infrastructure and services for 2006/07 is exactly the direction we should be going in," Mr Moore said.
In the 2006/07 National Land Transport Programme, district and city councils are receiving $612 million to maintain and improve local road networks, an increase of $132 million from last year.
Mr Moore is a strong advocate for increased funding for South Island roads and public transport and said he was delighted to see the Southern Motorway was featuring as a priority again.
The Christchurch City Council need LTNZ funding for a number of large projects including a new bus exchange, an investigation of light rail for the city and also options for northern access to the city, Mr Moore said.
The CCC is making it a priority to work with all others involved in ensuring that funding comes to the South Island.
