How concerned should we be about Avian Influenza in New Zealand?
Find out at the next Science in the City lecture on Wednesday 28 June, 1.10pm -1.50pm at Our City O-Tautahi, cnr Worcester Boulevard and Oxford Terrace.
Renowned clinical virologist Dr Lance Jennings will speak about new developments in the knowledge of influenza and how to plan and prepare for a pandemic.
Dr Jennings, who is spokesman for the National Influenza Strategy Group, works as a virologist for the Canterbury District Health Board and is a senior clinical lecturer for the Christchurch School of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Otago.
After completing his Ph.D in Virology at the University of Otago, Dr Jennings worked in the PHLS in the UK and at the University of Wisconsin, USA, before returning to establish a virology service in Christchurch in 1980. He has extensive experience in the development and application of conventional and molecular rapid virus diagnostic technologies. His research interests centre on the epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and control of influenza and other respiratory virus infections.
Science in the City is a free series of lunchtime lectures brought to you by Our City O-Tautahi and the Canterbury Branch of the Royal Society. Our City O-Tautahi is a Christchurch City Council community exhibition space on the corner of Oxford Terrace and Worcester Boulevard, by the Worcester Street bridge. Exhibitions are open 10am - 4pm, Monday to Saturday, and admission is free.
