24 July 2006

Professor David Carr from the University of North Carolina will present a free public lecture on cultural institutions and civic engagement at Our City O-Tautahi this Friday, 28 July from 2-4 pm.

In this presentation, Professor Carr will explore the idea of cultural institutions as spaces that inspire people to cross the limits of routine thought, into experiences of reflection and possibility. He will also consider what institutions such as libraries and museums can do for, and perhaps owe to, the lives of users and citizens.

He is the author of The Promise of Cultural Institutions (2003), A Place not a place: Reflection and Possibilities in Museums and Libraries (2006) and a regular contributor to the Journal of Museum Education.

In 2001 he was the lead speaker at the White House colloquium Exploring Community Partnerships for Lifelong Learning, convened by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. He has also worked as a consultant to numerous museums, galleries and heritage organisations.

The lecture is presented by National Services Te Paerangi, in partnership with MEANZ, Museum Studies ,School of Maori Studies at Massey University, Museum of Wellington City and Sea and the Christchurch City Council.
