Celebrating Hornby and Youth the flavour of two new exhibitions

13 December 2006

  • Hornby History Project

A new exhibition opens at Our City O-Tautahi which aims to educate and connect people with one of the city’s most colourful and resilient communities – Hornby.

Oral histories, photographs and memorabilia, including examples of Crown Crystal Glass, capture the character of the Hornby community which has both a rural and industrial heritage and is one which has attracted diverse cultural groups.

Curated by Our City O-Tautahi and VividPast Ltd, the exhibition offers opportunities for visitors to share their own memories. The project, which has been supported by the Riccarton / Wigram Community Board, was an initiative of Council Community Engagement Advisor Clare Quirke. It includes public programmes and community displays by VividPast Ltd, leading up to and including Heritage Week 2006.

Displays are open 11 December 2006 – 20 January 2007, 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday, Our City O-Tautahi, corner of Worcester Blvd and Oxford Tce. Admission Free.

  • Our Way: A youth’s view about Christchurch city

In the months following Harriet Thomas’s family moving from the United Kingdom to Christchurch and beginning school, it didn’t occur to her that she had the chance to start a whole new life.

All that changed when she started a course at school called iCreate, taught by well known photographer and teacher Tony Bridge.

Our City O-Tautahi is currently hosting her first exhibition.

“I have the chance to show my own and others’ view of Christchurch; how us teenagers go about doing our own thing,” she says.

Harriet has been accepted into CPIT’s Diploma in Photography for 2007.

Displays are open 11 December 2006 – 20 January 2007, 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday, Our City O-Tautahi, corner of Worcester Blvd and Oxford Tce. Admission Free.
