Last few days to register to help Clean Up the World

30 August 2006

The Christchurch City Council is now calling on all schools, groups, clubs, families and individuals to help it Clean Up the World for the 14th time.

Registrations for the event, which this year has a coastal theme, are required before Monday, 4 September. When registered, groups will be allocated one of 22 sections of coastline in the Greater Christchurch area to help clean up during the campaign week running from 11-17 September. Otherwise people can chose an area that they would like to clean up.

The City Council will also supply groups with rubbish bags, rubber gloves and transfer station passes. Alternatively, full rubbish bags can be left above the high tide line next to a walkway or rubbish bin for Council Rangers to collect each day.

Clean Up the World, which is held in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Programme, mobilises over 35 million volunteers from more than 110 countries annually, making it one of the largest community-based environmental campaigns in the world.

In 2005 more than 3500 people from 60 volunteer groups, schools and businesses throughout Christchurch helped to make the city sparkle.
