Unstable cliff face forces two evacuations
13 August 2006
An unstable cliff face has forced the evacuation of two residences in the Christchurch suburb of Sumner.
Earlier today a slip consisting of rocks and rubble caused damage to one garage and one house on Wakefield Avenue. There were no injuries but those evacuated by the Christchurch Police may not be able to return to their homes for some time.
Staff from EQC, ECan, Christchurch Police and Christchurch City Council are currently onsite investigating the stability of the cliff face – the full investigation could take several days.
The slip, which was probably the result of recent weather conditions, has not disrupted traffic as it occurred behind the properties.
