Council approves two further 40km/h school speed zones

Today’s meeting of the Christchurch City Council saw approval given for two more 40km/h school speed zones - one at Manning Intermediate, the other at Ilam School.

A school zone is a designated area around a school were motorists are legally required to slow down to 40km/h at certain times of the day, typically before and after school hours. Zones are marked by flashing signs positioned 150-200m on either side of a school’s road crossing.

Manning Intermediate Principal Richard Chambers says he is delighted that a school speed zone will be introduced at his school.

“We’re situated on a very busy road (Hoon Hay Road), so we are very much looking forward to the drop in speed. We had one near miss last year and hopefully the speed reduction will negate another,” he says.

To obtain a school speed zone, schools need to apply to Christchurch City Council for a technical assessment of the roads around the school.

There are now 16 school speed zones in Christchurch covering 23 schools.
