Seaside theme introduced as New Brighton Mall redevelopment continues

Surfboard seats and a new playground of seaside-themed gear will be introduced as part of the continuing redevelopment of New Brighton Mall.

As construction work for the slow road through the mall aims to complete as much footpath area as possible for better access to shops and businesses, work is continuing on the wider mall redevelopment work.

Works for the slow road are programmed to be completed by 25 November 2005, including the realignment of the intersection of Seaview Road and Hardy Street.

Project manager for the New Brighton Mall redevelopment Jeanette Ward says there has been some concern voiced over why the contractor, Calcon Ltd, was not working 24-hours to finish the work.

"The Council set in the contract a realistic deadline of 25 November and the contractor must manage their programme to meet that deadline," Ms Ward says. It is anticipated that the official opening of the road will co-incide with the New Brighton Christmas Parade.

The project will proceed in stages to reduce disruption to the community, with the south side of the slow road to be completed first. Calcon Ltd is responsible for safety on the worksite, which includes the footpath that is used throughout the contract. A feature of the redeveloped mall will be surfboard-design seats, to be installed throughout. Council is inviting businesses, property owners or community groups wishing to sponsor the seats to contact her on 941 8876 or email jeanette.ward@ccc.govt.nz, Ms Ward says. All sponsored seats will have a stainless steel plaque displaying the name of the sponsor attached.

The Artworks in Burwood/Pegasus Working Party had also concluded that the most suitable place for a new playground was the east side of the slow road, outside the New Brighton Denture Clinic. This area was sheltered from the easterly and was approved by the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board on 7 September as the best site for the playground.

All equipment removed from the old playground would be used elsewhere in New Brighton, but the new playground would have new equipment with a seaside theme. A form of barrier would also be set up to stop children running onto the road.

Space for performing arts and events, like the Buskers Festival, would be provided at the western end of the mall’s pedestrian section, complete with a power source.

Further developments in the New Brighton commercial area will include a tidy-up of Beresford Street between Union Street and Marine Parade. The community will be given the opportunity to participate in this.
