City's prime coastal walkways get a revamp

2 September 2005

Whitewash Head and Taylors Mistake walkways will be upgraded over the next few months to make them safer and easier to use, according to Christchurch City Council’s  Coastal Park Rangers.

Whitewash Head walkway will be upgraded by re-routing the notorious initial climb away from the cliff edge. A lookout deck and seating will be incorporated into the changes, positioned to take full advantage of the spectacular views over Christchurch and the Canterbury Plains.

A rutted steep section of the Taylor’s Mistake walkway near the Giant’s Nose will be improved by re-directing it to zig zag up a gentler slope and away from the cliff edge.

“The work will be carried out by Te Ngahere Native Forest Management which has considerable experience in track maintenance and development,” CCC Coastal Park Ranger Ian Surgenor said.

Work is due to start in about two weeks time. Functioning parts of the walkways will remain open while the upgrading is taking place.
