What would your dream library be like?
1 September 2005
If you’ve visited South Christchurch, New Brighton or the brand new Parklands libraries, you’ll know that libraries are changing. No longer stuffed full of dusty books and stuffy staff, today’s libraries are the perfect leisure escape, with cafes, lounge areas, sea views, water features or sculptures, video games, satellite tv, internet access and not just the latest bestselling books, but also DVDs, CDs, magazines and kids’ CD-ROMs.
Christchurch City Libraries is leading New Zealand in creating inspirational libraries of the future, so as part of New Zealand’s Library Week, they want your ideas on what your dream library would be like. It’s your chance to imagine the future of libraries in the city.
What would your library look like? What would it have in it? What could you do in it? Using just words, pictures or both, tell the Libraries’ team what kind of library you’d like to see. Whether you’re an adult or child, it’s a call to everyone to put pen to paper and design the library of their dreams. There are prizes for the most inspiring ideas, including an mp3 player, CD and book vouchers and lots of library goodies.
Entry forms are available from any Christchurch City library, or download a form at library.christchurch.org.nz/events/libraryweek. Entries must be received by Monday 12 September 2005.
Billed as “7 days of inspiration” about the “lifetime of opportunity” which libraries offer, Library Week, Te Wiki O Nga Whare Pukapuka, runs from 5 to 11 September. Christchurch City Libraries’ next ‘dream’ library opens in Upper Riccarton in December. One of the largest community libraries in the country, the state-of-the-art 1,500 square-metre building will be the first combined public and school library in a major urban area.
