Family day to celebrate life in Hei Hei

18 October 2005

The communities of Hei Hei are kicking off Christchurch Neighbourhood Week by hosting a free celebration of local life on Saturday 29 October.

Based at Hei Hei Community Centre and next-door Wycola Park, the event will run from 11am to 3pm, with lots of activities for the whole family, including live stage performances, sports, games, special prizes, and food stalls.

Entertainment on offer will include a local brass band, kapahaka and dance performances, and cultural singing. There’ll also be donkey rides, a bouncy castle, kite-making, representatives of the Rams playing basketball, hockey, indoor bowls, spiritual reading, and card-making. All the entertainment and activities are free.

Christchurch City Council Recreation Coordinator, Gina Stewart, says it will be a great day for the Hei Hei community to get together and enjoy what the neighbourhood has to offer.  The day also celebrates the re-opening of the community hall, which has been closed for several months for refurbishments.  “There’s no better place to see a community pull together to celebrate their neighbourhood than here in Hei Hei. It’s going to be a fun day for everyone.”

Hei Hei Community Centre is at 12 Wycola Avenue, next to Wycola Park.

The event is supported by SPARC (Sport & Recreation New Zealand), Canterbury Community Trust and Christchurch City Council’s Riccarton/Wigram Community Board.
