Charlesworth Reserve Planting Day

Greenfingers will be flying at Charlesworth Reserve on Sunday 29 May as the local community and supporting agencies attempt to plant more than 3000 plants.

The planting event between 10.30am and 12.30pm will be held rain or shine, with a barbecue provided for everyone taking part.  Tools will be supplied.

“We are hoping as many people as possible will come and help us with this project, which will assist in creating native bush in this wonderful new reserve,” Christchurch City Council coastal parks ranger, Scott Butcher said.

“The work being done at Charlesworth Reserve is important in helping to re-establish features of Estuary-edge ecosystems such as saltmeadow, saltmarsh and coastal bush that are now either very rare around the estuary or non-existent.”

Work at Charlesworth Reserve in the next two to three years will include large scale planting of coastal bush; installation of culverts to allow tidal flows to enter the reserve; development of walking tracks and bridges; installation of new signage; and the continuation of a predator trapping programme. 

The Charlesworth Reserve Planting Day is a joint Trees for Canterbury and Christchurch City Council event, supported by Ferrymead/Brookhaven Residents Association and the Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust, who have been actively involved in  the development of the Reserve. 

Access to the planting site will be off Charlesworth St (from Ferry Road). Parking will be available along Charlesworth St.
