Mediation fails to avert strike at Christchurch City Council
16 March 2005
Strike action at Christchurch City Council looks set to go ahead on 24 March. Attempts today (16 March) to mediate a settlement between the Council and the Southern Local Government Officers Union (SOLGM) failed to reach agreement.
Council General Manager of Human Resources, Philippa Jones, says that she was not surprised by the lack of progress.
“Given that negotiations have been under way for 10 months and little progress was achieved in that time, it would have been unexpected to see instant progress in mediation today.
“We will be seeking to resume our discussions with the union after the industrial action.”
Contingency plans are in place to minimise any disruption to Council services during the strike, which will take place between 10am and 2pm on Thursday, 24 March.
