Christchurch City Council seeks consent for diesel boiler

The Christchurch City Council has applied for a resource consent to install a diesel boiler to replace its existing coal boiler.

The new diesel boiler should  be operational in late March next year. It is expected to reduce particulate emissions by 75 per cent, says Mike Stockwell, the Council’s Project Manager.

The Council’s resource consent for its existing coal boiler expires in early November this year.

To enable the coal boiler to operate to the end of the heating season in late November, the Council has applied for a new short term consent for coal. This consent is expected to be notified by Ecan  tomorrow (Wednesday July 6). It will only be needed for the last three weeks of November and during the occasional cold snap day over the summer months, Mr Stockwell says.

The Council’s new diesel boiler  will be started up in March/April 2006 with the onset of the colder weather.  The new diesel boiler will have much lower pollutant emissions  than the old coal boiler.

The Council has budgeted $420,000 for this project. This sum covers items such as planning, design, tendering, construction supervision, civil and mechanical items and work.
