Building owner can proceed with demolition - Christchurch Council
24 January 2005
Christchurch City Council says plans by the owner of fire-damaged buildings in the central city can go ahead with demolition work to make the structures safe.
Parts of the buildings -- on the end of the block surrounded by Bedford Row, Madras Street and Cashel Street – were subject to Environment Court orders, and while engineers were considering how best to approach the job today, the CCC wanted to be sure those plans were compatible with the court’s decisions.
“The work proposed to make the area safe is not effected by the previous Environment Court decisions,” says John Buchan, the City Council’s building control manager. “The building owner and Fire Service can go ahead with their plans.”
To ensure the safety of the public while demolition work is being done, the Council has shut roads in the area to traffic and pedestrians.
