Alternative routes advised as improvements begin at intersection

20 January 2005

People are advised to start considering alternative routes to the Straven-Clarence-Riccarton roads intersection from Monday, when improvement work will begin at the site to provide double and turning lanes for greater traffic capacity.

Work starts on Monday, 24 January, with the demolition of the former Kutwell Fabrics building at the corner of Riccarton and Clarence roads to allow for the widening of Clarence Road.

Council Contracts Engineer Kevin Burgess says the outcome would be improved and safer traffic flow at one of the city’s busiest intersections. For now, however, it was best that people avoided the intersection where traffic flow would be  reduced to one lane during various stages.

The road works, which also includes widening the Straven and Riccarton road approaches, is scheduled to take about 14 weeks - weather permitting – with a completion date of 30 April.

The works will cause delays, so the Council advises that road users begin considering alternative routes, Mr Burgess says.

Property owners, businesses and residents in the area had been informed with start-work notices hand delivered to those most affected.
