Hi De Hi! Christchurch kids’ city camping proving popular
14 January 2005
The Great Kids Camp Out - the newest thing for families in Christchurch City Council’s SummerTimes programme -- is proving to be a hit, with all camps well subscribed.
The camps, organised in association with Guide Canterbury, are being held on different city parks and reserves over four nights from 19-22 January. The plan was to offer five venues but bookings were light for the first night, 18 January on Cutherbert’s Green, so that one was cancelled.
Registration has now closed and about 500 children and their parents and caregivers have signed up to take part in the free event, which includes evening BBQs, twilight games, singalongs around a (gas-fired) campfire and a Weetbix breakfast in the morning. Tents are being supplied for families which don’t have their own.
This novel opportunity allows Christchurch families to try camping right in their community’s back yard. Next Wednesday (19 January), tents will pop up on Elmwood Park in Merivale. The next night (20 January), the camp is at Halswell Domain; then it’s on to Parklands Reserve and the last night (Saturday 22 January) the venue is Hansen Park, on the Heathcote River in Opawa.
