Surf, save and soar at New Brighton’s big Summer Sunday

12 January 2005

New Brighton Beach is set for its biggest Summer Sunday this weekend, 16 January,  as the South Island Surf League champs plunge into action north of the Pier just as The Press Kite Day takes flight on the south side.

The Press Kite Day is an exciting new addition to the Christchurch City Council’s SummerTimes programme in association with The Kite Shop. Families will be treated to some spectacular international kite-flyer demonstrations as they enjoy flying their own kites on the beach.

World record holder for creating the largest kites, Peter Lynn, will feature in the big kite displays with a couple of surprises making their world-first kite flights.

English kite-fliers are expected to thrill with mermaid and seahorse kites while Dutch kite-fliers plan to steal the scene with two-line freestyle trick kites of a calibre never seen before in New Zealand.

The Kite Day event will run on New Brighton beach from 11am to 3pm while the Surf champs are in full swing just nextdoor north of the pier from 10am to 4pm. Seven local and one Otago team will compete surf-side.

There is also good news on the weather front from the Met Service Weather Ambassador, Bob McDavitt, who forecasts a Sunday that is “fine with a northerly of some sort,”.  Kite-fliers have their fingers crossed for a northeaster.
